Image Bank

This is a raw, gritty example of portraiture, and how by taking a simple dead pan shot can reveal so much about the individual, how the clothes and tattoos and haircut represent the man in the photograph, I like how the tonality of the image is so strong due to it being in black and white, I presume this was taken on a set of film, that's why the clarity is so raw, film and black and white are things I want to experiment with in my project.

The context of this image  plays more of a role than the actual photography in this shot, football is a massive passion for many people as it is a huge part of British culture. By shooting ordinary things it makes them more beautiful and understandable because it explores the role that it has on peoples lives.

Making music, performing, hip-hop, the evolution of music, this image seems to capture all these elements, it's a clever image as it's portrait but at the same time shows someone in the process that they enjoy, giving a true reflection within a portrait, this is something I'd like to incorporate into my portraiture.

This image looks as though it could be a Polaroid, Polaroids are often very overexposed, however this gives an effect which is often interesting to look at. It captures the art of performance, and music as a platform allows the artist to manifest any means in the culture that he explores. I want to take images of live music as I find it very interesting.

The importance of taking pictures of normal people in normal circumstances, once again this portrait shows the man in a location, creating intrigue and insight to the man, what he's doing there? why's he there? etc, this helps to make for an interesting photography, open for interpretation.

I like the almost translucent quality of the image, the almost whitewashed affect the image has, this is clearly an art shot, either shot with film or a Polaroid camera, this is an experimental shot intending the odd colouration and light. The context of the image shows habit and culture. The style and experimental nature is something I really want to explore and work with in my project.

This shot is of a lorry with people on top, signs surrounding on either side, two police officers have their backs to the camera watching the oncoming lorry. The frame of the shot really makes this image as it includes two main forces in any demonstration, the law and the protesters, it also captures the DIY spirit of demonstrating.

This image captures the quintessential image of British police officers, and someone the rivalry and controversy between the public and the establishment that has always existed in Britain. I like the bright tonality of the shot, despite the fact it's in black and white, this is due to the police officers fluorescent jackets.

This shot depicts the tension in race relations that have always existed in the UK, it shows black men on a stand with a megaphone in the middle of a demonstration, with high rise flats in the backdrop of the shot. The frame of the shot is the essence of the image, it show's political urban Britain.

This image shows the different class system in Britain, diversity in fashion and culture etc. The image is of two business men in full suits, umbrellas and hats, crossing the pad in single file, and a bohemian couple in patterned suit and dress. It shows the essence of the 60's and the diversity in wealth and culture.

This shot shows a group of young skinhead males, walking along the pavement . It looks as though they could be on their way to the football. Both skinhead and football culture goes hand in hand and is a massive part of Britain, I like the perspective of the shot as it shows them walking off into the distance.

Club culture is big subculture in Britain, with all different influences from music and styles, such as punk, 90's rave etc. It appeals to the masses and the counterculture scene. The image shows off the bright  neon colours of rave culture, also the links with sexuality that club culture has.

In this image it records the era of pirate radio station, inn this image a camera is shooting two disc jokey's at the mic spinning records. The black and white really picks up the diversity in tone, from the dark vinyl to the wood of the desk etc.

This image shows a time in Britain, the 60's where women started to have more rights and become more accepted politically. The image is reminiscent of the fashion of dresses and style of fringes.

Paul Mcartney is an iconic figure in British culture, a man who pioneered music through Britain. The image emphasises the very quintessential British settings, eating chips in paper, sleeveless patterned jumpers, white shirts. The black and white really brings out all the different tones.

This image is of miners lining up and sitting down for food, in what appears to be a soup kitchen. It shows the poverty of the time and what the miners have to experience. The tonality of the piece is very melancholy, with the light tones of the whitewashed walls, tables etc, making quite a gloomy setting appear airy and light.

The national railway, is a big part of British culture, through the industrial era as in this picture, where trains were powered with coal, it shows national heritage. The image is very bleak due to the dark, blank tones, the sky takes up most of the shot, which makes for a heavy contrast of the blank dull sky and the houses and dark train.

This is another image of miners after they've come out the kits and are getting changed in locker rooms, their faces are filthy from the coal material they have been mining. The image connotes poverty and illness as it is severely damming to ones health mining coal.

In this shot all the miners are in their overcoats and helmets, appearing to come out of the mines. The elevator towers are in the back drop, showing the scar of industry in the process of mining. The image emphasises the historical significance that it has played in the building of this country.

This is another image of a demonstration, of what appears to be a group of hippies in a field with the police, a police officer i pushing one of them away, they are wall standing and sitting down in protest. Demonstration is a massive part of british culture, which evolved out of 60's hippie movement.

This shows the tradition of drinking Guinness in the pub, it is an Irish drink and so has effected culture across Great Britain. In this image there are lots of young people, which shows how the drinking culture is something passed down, into a party culture of young people drinking at their local pub.

This is a old traditional pin, with old men and women having a pint of beer and enjoying the ambience of being in a local pub, socialising. I like the warm feel of the image with the old wood and bright lighting. The image is very nostalgic.

This shows the roots of Britain, how it was made out of people putting their lives on the line to scale large buildings to develop building the structure. The working class, who were given no protection from falling. The image depicts the whole urban landscape form their perspective.

This image captures the bleakness of the time, in a waiting room, dressed in tweed hats, large black overcoats. The blank wall makes for a good backdrop, all the figures are clear and eye catching against the backdrop.

This image captures middle class Britain, in which a fad is depicted, of cheese fondue, at the time this is a middle class statement of trend and current dining, that the working class would definitely not be able to afford.

This image is very British, all the clothes ans setting of the room is reminiscent of the 60's or 70's, a pot of tea is on the table in front of the woman, tea is iconic of British culture. The woman looks distressed with her head in her hands, this is also very British as in Britain we all tend to just get on with it without sharing our problems.

Holding animals is quite common in Britain, self-sufficiency is a very British ideal. Having a few animals and getting food out of them. The bleakness of the image shows what can appear to be thatchers Britain with the houses in the backdrop.

This shows very middle class Britian, men in suits, women in lavish dresses, dancing  with a white grand piano in the backdrop. This symbolises the wealth in the 70's juxtaposing the poverty all across Britain.

This shows 80's Britain with all the new construction of houses and highrise flats in the backdrop. The two boys appear that they're from quite working class families living on a newly built estate.

The construction of electric pylons was huge in the 80's showing the influence of Thatchers Government at the  time, with the quite clinical looking flats and estates being made, showing the null and void buildings in Britain.

Wide Angle Close Up Image Bank

The image looks as though its been shot with a flash as, the close up frog is the only thing that is bright, the backdrop looks dull and dark. The wide angle helps to give a view into the environment of the frogs habitat, the flash also helps to draw attention to the only close up part of the image being the main subject of the frog. The light for the close up is also projected on to the log that the frog is perched on, creating an interesting angle.

The fungi in this photo look life sized, the angle on the floor level is really cool as it gives us the perspective we're looking up at the trees, the wide angle creates this effect, the close up is really clear and natural, the out of focus backdrop emphasises the definition on the close up subject. The mossy bottom that the mushrooms are on are just as in focus as the main subject.

This image represents youth, the angle is the main component which makes the image so effective as it really gives a scope into the scene, the girl looking up means we can see her expression, fun really sets the theme and it means the close up part of the shot is a lot more interesting. The wide angle part of the shot means that context is shed on the light, capturing her movements in still image, on the swing, the image looks like it has been taken with a fish eye lens giving a good scope to the shot.

The Close up part to this image, is very clear and bright, it automatically captures the viewers attention as it stands out more than any other part in the image. The angle of the shot makes for a really aesthetically pleasing wide angle shot, as the whole shot encapsulates the rest of the field, the flowers, trees and the sky making for both elements in the shot as very effective.

This image shows the importance Wide angle plays on understanding the context of the image, and the value that it has in showing a scene. In this shot, the Wide angle shows a metro or tube, with the carriage and people as the backdrop. The Close up part is the man, he is staring into the camera, the expression on his face and what he is doing is found in the context of the whole image ie the wide angle element.

Macro Image Bank

Due to the macro setting used in the image, definition is very strong, all the parts of the complex makeup of an eye are visible, the black and white really helps to bring out the subtle differences in certain tones, The reflection in the eye is also really cool. The frame captures all the main components of the eye, the iris in this looks amazing, al the intricate parts are so clear and contrasting.

The backdrop of the mute blues and purples really help to bring out the same colours in the fly, the backdrop almost appears floral, as though the insect has just been collecting pollen. The macro shot is very detailed, clear and intricate, the way that the backdrop is  out of focus really helps to add definition to the fly, making the viewers attention drawn automatically to the main subject.

The backdrop being out of focus and the focus being all on the ladybird and parts of the plant, help to bring out the colours, the detail is so strong that the viewer can even see the hairs n moisture on the leaves of the plant. The ladybird is the punctum of the shot and is therefore the most poignant aspect of the image. In my opinion the frame could be a little bit smaller to get rid of excess unused space that doesn't add to the shot.

This image shows the intricacy of an animals eye, it appears to be a big cat. The colour is really strong in this, and i like the reflection in the creatures eye. The focus is all on the eye and diverts attention from the somewhat blurry hair on the animal. The dark line contrasts heavily with the eye itself, the macro technique effectively shows the miniature parts as life-size.

The angle really makes the shot, enabling the viewer to see the eye of  cat in a brand new perspective, the transparency of the eyeball extends outwards, appearing as a transparent sphere. The image looks really good against the backdrop as it makes all the parts of the animal come alive. The whole image looks like its illuminated with a sort of purple light bouncing off all the lighter parts of the cat, like the chin for example, the cat also looks like its staring up towards the projected light.

Location Portraiture Image Bank

The frame on this image is very effective as it is very wide yet shallow, meaning there is a wide scope of the landscape this is very suited to the surface of the corn field that it's taken above as it is all fairly the same height. I like how the image is taken as the corn closest to the camera and the backdrop is all out of focus, making the viewer focus into the middle part, where the little boy has his head poking out the corn.

The shot is very ethereal, the image connotes the idea of femininity as a very natural, showing women as spiritually in touch with the natural world. The way the woman is backed in to the ferns of the tree give the effect she is merging and at one with nature. The image emphasizes the importance of location giving a lot of different ideas to the shot and meaning to the subject shot within the portraiture.

The shot captures the man in his own home, probably in his normal habits and doings, this shows the relevance of shooting the subject of the portrait in their own habitat, representing what they're interests and habits are, getting a natural and real portrayal of them as people rather than just a subject in a picture. The expression and action that the man is making almost looks as though he's saying this is my reality and life.

This image captures an action showing a habit, the man looks to be in his own environment, the clothes he is wearing and look that he is giving and the cigarette hanging out his mouth all come together to set a scene. The contrast in this image is really strong and changing, the fact that it's black and white and taken by a film camera really helps to emphasise the change in tonality.

Image result for don mccullin portraits

This image shows a man in war, he looks like he is suffering from shell shock due to the corrupt and shocking nature of war. The look on his face is of complete shock horror, the importance of location is not as strong in this image as we gather all our knowledge from him due to what he's wearing and the way he looks giving us understanding to where he actually is.

Sequencing Image Bank

This image effectively shows sequencing, The image is taken from a good angle as it includes the backdrop of a ship, clouds and the sky. The projection of the motorbike is perfectly shown, the rotation is also shown well. The surface of the water is very clear and contrasting with the sky, the reflection on the surface of the water is very clear and crisp.

The flips are perfectly shown within the image, the frame is perfect as it doesn't show any excess picture that doesn't fit. The brightness of the image is very strong, the blue sky and the runway are very bright. I like how in the sequence of images, the man is changing his shapes each time as to add diversity to the shot.

The contrast in this image is the strongest part of the shot, the bright colours that the sports person is wearing stand out and contrast strongly within the bleak backdrop. The black and white of the snow, sky and trees, are already very strong in tone, and the varied colour tones of the snowboarder make for a very interesting image.

The amount of sequencing in this shot is very impressive, as there are hardly any gaps at all over such a long distance, this shows that the camera must of been working at a very fast shutter speed. The snow looks perfectly illuminated by the sun and against the airiness of the bus sky, the fact that the image has been taken when the sun is out adds an extra dimension to the shot.

This is one of the more interesting images as the sequencing is overlapping, giving an authentic result, this is due to the angle taken and generally because skating is composed of tricks, meaning that it is not a very linear sport. The colours in the shot are fairly drab but give a rustic result and also fairly whitewashed, there are not many bright colours in this image at all.
