Mid-term Evaluation

In my Photography project, I've focused on documentary style photography, as this is my preferred genre of photography, both in taking and viewing, I wanted my project to be based on British culture, as I thought it would be a very broad topic, where I can explore all ages, subcultures, pastimes and what it really means to be British. After taking my first five shoots, i've now decided theres other elements within in British culture that I think are essential to the true meaning of Britain; the external cultures from around the world effect Britain, that is something I really want to focus on as I think that it plays a vital role in British Identity.

So far within my shoots, for my first shoot, I decided to shoot along the norfolk seaside where some of my family live, my shots came out as a mix of landscape and portraits, within the portraits I tried to show and incorporate British pastime and habit. In the second shoot I decided to go up to Camden and take pictures along the canal, market and high road, I was happy with the shots but what I also have found out by looking back at these is that the images that I took from the shot which have people ion, the portraits from the shoot; are the strongest, best shots that I have taken.

After taking the last 5 shoots, in review my favourite shoot that I have done is shoot 4 , with a group of friends and people I met out on the streets before a gig, drinking, smoking, socialising, I believe that by far that is my strongest shoot and most interesting to view. This shows to me that naturally my photography is going more in the style of documentary portraiture than any other types of documentary, I still want to incorporate other types of documentary style, for example I have been very eager, to take pictures of chicken shops, showing the roots of culture, British and foreign and how they culminate together in the likes of food, and also public transport, Public transport is  a massive part of our everyday lives in Britain, the tube, the train, national rail, the bus, this would be in my opinion to very strong shoots with the lots of cultural significance. It is obvious that from my portraiture in shot 4 I am also more tended to focusing on youth culture, but I still see a relevance and direct link to youth in british culture, especially in certain subcultures like mods, for example in shoot 5, essentially al subcultures are youth movements, but age defies what it means to be part of a movement, so taking pictures of all ages defies this myth, I understand it can be seen the age is a certain theme within my photography, but I want the more important underlying themes to be seen instead, from whatever age my subjects might be.

Also another future shooting idea I have is, developing on shoots that I feel could've gone better, and could be strengthened in someone way, taking past iras and themes to make better into a more cohesive and interesting series of images, for example my shoot in Camden could be greatly strengthened with the company of a friend, developing my portraiture photography that I want to focus and also just making the shoot better, as in review in my work diary I stated that I feel the shots could have been greatly improved with a friend being there.

  1. Within this section you should be identifying the areas of your first shoots that went well and describing why they went well... You have identified possible areas of work that you would wish to work on for the future... shoots that you would wish to pursue so well done for that.

In areas of your evaluation there is a need for greater clarity for example "essentially al subcultures are youth movements, but age defies what it means to be part of a movement, so taking pictures of all ages defies this myth, I understand it can be seen the age is a certain theme within my photography, but I want the more important underlying themes to be seen instead, from whatever age my subjects might be." what do you mean?
