My Personal Investigation is: The areas and styles of photography that I want to focus on this year is documentary style photography, exploring British culture, I would really love to experiment with film photography and black and white. In some shoots I want to specialize in portraiture to explore how someones identity defines a culture, how the way they dress says something about them in terms of interests and beliefs.
This is a very interesting portrait, the image connotes British culture, as the man is clearly holding his dog which is an English bulldog this is a patriotic symbol of the UK, I like the deep colours of the shot the whole piece has a very good tonality, the image also has a very good frame as the contrast between the man and his dog and the dull backdrop of light grey's and beige looks amazing making the main subjects crisp and attention catching. The snapback and the joint/cigarette depicts general youth culture in Britain. This is a great documentary style piece.
This image depicts two girls fighting and people trying to hold them back as to disperse the fight, it's taking place on a terrace of a flat, with other run down flats in the background. The shot connotes youth, anger, working class etc, the scene is a very ordinary scene as youth generally argue and fight showing the value of taking images of normal everyday life, this is definitely something I want to encapsulate into my photography. The angle is also really good as it capture the scene along a wall with the backdrop of the environment that they come from in the background.
The shot shows a young woman rolling up cannabis, lying on her bed, the image shows habit, routine, drugs in normal everyday youth. I love the minimal style that Wheatley uses in all his photography, its very understated, documentary style images, I want to use this sort of style in my own shooting. The use of light in the image is very cool as it is very airy and yet subtle with a very even tonality throughout the whole of the image. The frame and angle of the image pull us into the subjects world and the process of her drug use, making for an excellent documentary shot, also showing a great example of youth in British culture.
Gavin Watson shoots British subcultures, In this image it is of a new romantic/ skin youth with stereo, the image connotes style, The tonality of the piece is really contrasting and is emphasized by the black and white, the way his clothes and skin contrasts with the backdrop, gloves and stereo are very striking. I want to incorporate this black and white film portraiture into my style, the portrait is very effective as he has a possession which shows identity and his interests, giving the viewer a better understanding of the subject.
This image is very eery and yet it is a coming of age, youth finding identity type piece, as the boy is getting his head shaved symbolising that he is a skinhead, maybe just introduced to the culture, but because of how young he looks all these questions are raised. The contrast is amazing in this with the dark colour of the boys skin against his mates hand cutting his hair, makes this a very nostalgic shot. Watson seems to incorporate activities in his portraiture as he has purposely shot the process of the skin subculture, showing the value of identity in youth, this is a very interesting image.

The picture symbolises young love and adoration in teenagers, the image looks almost whitewashed, very pale but with clarity and contrast still. The boy in the picture looks proud to kiss his girlfriend and she looks like shes reluctantly enjoying it, the image shows the importance of British subcultures, how it forms identity and brings people together like the couple in the shot. It is a documentary piece with a nostalgic feel to it. I love the picture because it shows the beauty in being young and not caring.

My Personal investigation is: Write down in two to three sentences the nature of your Personal investigation.. This can be categorised as an idea, issue, concept or theme of an investigation ( what do you want to find out or communicate in your project).
Identify the photographic techniques that you might want to explore… this will include any techniques that were learnt within both the AS and AS transition weeks studies.
Define any photographers research that you have done as part of this proposal.
I did not spot any work diaries within your blogger which is not a good start.. You need to do a work diary per technique with a progression section as outlined in Qube.
Sorry George, I forgot to mention that the subject area is great and it is one I am sure you will be successful in, try to access photographers where there is some solid research related to youth, youth culture and Britain these could include Gavin Watson, Larry Clarke and Simon Wheatley.. (to name a few). bring in their visuals into your illustrated proposal and analyse their images, How can their work impact on your project...
